Health Status OutcomesStroke is a major cause of long-term disability in the U.S. Of those 65 years or older who experience an ischemic stroke, 30% of survivors are unable to walk without some assistance. In addition, of those age 40 and older, 21% of men and 24% of women who have an initial stroke die within one year. The time required to recover from a stroke can vary based on the severity of brain damage. About 50% to 70% of survivors regain functional independence. About 15% to 30% are permanently disabled.^1^[[br]]
